Auto Shipping

Nowadays moving your vehicle without driving it is as easy as moving yourself.  Auto shipping is big business. There are however, some things you should know before you ship your vehicle. Obviously, the first thing is to find a reliable Vehicle shipping company, get multiple quotes and compare your options.  Once you have selected a company, there is some prep work for you to do.

Be sure to remove all your personal belongings from the vehicle.  Most companies won't allow them in the vehicle while shipping due to insurance and weight restrictions. You might also consider inspecting your vehicle with the shipping company at the pick-up and drop-off points so both parties are covered if any damage occurs while in transport.  This is an unlikely event, but it can happen.  You may want to check with your own insurance company prior to transportation to find out what is and isn't covered, and are they primary or secondary during transportation.

It might also be a good idea to mention to the auto shipper anything in your vehicle that might be considered an addition and cause the quote to be off.  If your car is classic, custom, or otherwise expensive, try to get enclosed auto shipping. The extra cost will be worth the peace of mind.  One of the more important things is to make sure you have a set of keys for the shipping company and a set of keys for yourself. It's amazing how many people forget that.

In order to assure yourself of being able to file a claim if anything happens to your car while in transport, clean it out and take a picture of it for documentation.  Make sure there are no fluid leaks and check the charge in the battery. Please deactivate your car's alarm system if it has one.  Can you imagine a carrier full of cars going down the road with a sounding alarm?

Another thing some people forget is that the car might be going to a new climate and need the oil, coolant and other fluids changed.  The fluid systems in cars react to new climates just like the blood in people's veins does.

Drive your car until you only have ¼ of a tank of gas. This reduces the weight and is better for transport. To be on the safe side, remove any equipment that is not built-in. Some insurance companies won't cover things left in the vehicles while auto shipping because of the chances of damage to them from jostling around while the carrier is moving.
